Introducing the Bridge to CPOE
Clinical Online Delivery System (CODS)

St. Vincent Health and Zanett have jointly developed Clinical Online Delivery System (CODS) software to support standardized, evidence-based order sets at the point of care, arming doctors and clinicians with critical information to improve medication safety and patient care. With this solution, physicians and nurses will be able to spend more time with patients and less time on the charting required of them in creating paper records.
In addition, applying clinical decision support at the point of care lays the foundation for demonstrating “meaningful use” of technology in the future, as outlined for obtaining federal stimulus funds established in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
CODS was developed for hospitals without a fully implemented electronic medical record (EMR) system. It serves as a “bridge” strategy towards moving to CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry), an application that enables providers to enter medical orders into a computer system in an inpatient or ambulatory setting. CODS is accessed via a Web browser and is commonly integrated with an existing secure physician portal site. This allows physicians to select their desired order items via a Web browser or mobile device, and enables them to print a legible customized form of hospital admitting or transfer orders for their signature.
Patient Safety
CODS allows for the efficient use of evidence-based order sets and physician expert consensus. These order sets are designed to provide the best possible care with the latest available medical knowledge and medication choices with accurate dosages.
Cost Savings
Order sets in CODS incorporate the latest guidelines in patient management, and carefully screened choice of drugs based on appropriateness and cost effectiveness. Whenever a less expensive medication or generic alternative is recommended for a particular condition, it can be easily incorporated into the current order set and provides for an updated version for all physician users of the system.
System Efficiency
CODS allows for quick and easy access to the latest evidence-based order sets that can be specifically tailored to the patient condition or diagnosis. Order sets are printed legibly thus reducing the likelihood of medication errors and ambiguous treatments. It also reduces the need to call back physicians to clarify orders and correct errors in the ordering process.
Quality of Care
Making evidence-based medicine easily available to physicians and nurse practitioners means they are better able to apply the latest research findings, best practices and expert opinion. Standardizing order set content for each facility within the health system reduces variation leading to process improvement and higher quality.
